Clan Logan Canada encourages the use of the Chiefly crest on cap badges, on display and on flags as it is an Important tradition to be proud of. The Chief is the start of it all. The Chiefly crest has the motto in Latin ''Hoc Majorum Virtus' meaning roughly '' this is the valour of my ancestors''.
The heart in the middle is rumoured to be the heart of King Robert the Bruce as when he died, Sir James Douglas was to take the heart of the king to the Holy land Jerusalem, the king's dying wish . He was accompanied by 2 Logan knights,
Sir Robert Logan and Sir Walter Logan. They were part of a noble Scottish contingent entrusted with carrying the embalmed heart of King Robert the Bruce on crusade.
On their way to the Holy Land, in Teba, there was an ambush and the Logan knights were slain, this is why a passion nail pierces the heart in our crest. The crest version you see is the Clan Logan Canada crest. There are many interpretations of the crest that show the passion nail through the heart but all recall that same story about our Chiefly legacy, something we must never forget. Logans should always demonstrate their pride in their Chief, this is encouraged at Highland games to show unity. It's how clansmen and clanswomen show their pride in their heritage.
Sometimes, a person may chose to wear other types of crest badges. This has nothing to do with disrespecting the Chief or disrespecting or refusing to follow tradition. No matter what a clansman or clanswoman wears, they are still, by their family name, linked to the Chief. Some people may wear a belt and buckle badge that has a thistle in the middle to show their love of Scotland for example. Whatever a clansman or Clanswoman shows, it changes nothing, it's personal choice. The Chiefly crest is the one everyone recognizes in the world.
Clan Logan Canada is proud to be based in a country that, like Scotland, has its own heraldic authority the Canadian Heraldic Authority. This means that Canada has official rules governing the use of heraldry, and we honour those traditions.
In Canada, assumed arms—which are coats of arms not granted by a recognized authority are not officially acknowledged. While they may be artistically appealing, they are not considered proper under Canadian heraldic law. Therefore, any member of our organization with assumed arms should not display them and must instead use the Chiefly crest as a symbol of clan unity and respect.
However, if a Clan Logan member has officially registered arms through the Canadian Heraldic Authority, we welcome and encourage their display. These are considered an honour and are recognized legal heraldic devices, created by skilled heralds who ensure all traditions are respected. They must be displayed exactly as granted in the official letters patent.
We ask that the Chiefly crest always be shown, ideally in a prominent position, out of reverence for our clan’s origins and our Chief.
As a cultural Scottish community, we value personal heritage. When someone chooses to pursue their own heraldry, it's not a claim of superiority, it’s a meaningful expression of pride in their family’s story. In Canada, only a select few hold officially registered arms. Currently, there are just three recognized Logan armigers, one of them being our President and Commissioner Steven Logan, and we hope more clan members will be inspired to pursue their own heraldic legacy.
